Well this really does suck. We basically got a 3 week trial version.
I will be deleting this application... too bad... I was just beginning to appreciate it.
I'm not impressed in the least bit by this developers attitude.

DON'T DO THIS!!! Just because one developer is being an ass does not mean you need to go out and permanently damage MacHeist's reputation over something that in all likelihood is completely out of their control. Yazsoft is the one being stupid, make the Digg about THEM and NOT MacHeist!!!

Did you read the Digg page? It is completely about the developer.

"YazSoft makers of Speed Download recently updated to version 5.0 which according to the MH website and website should be a free upgrade but instead users get a 21 day demo...from YazSoft.com If you purchased SD 4 between Jan 01, 2008 and Feb 12, 2008, you may upgrade to SD 5 for FREE."

Yes I read the Digg but you mention MacHeist in the title. Poeple who hate MacHeist (and there are many) are going to see and and say to their friends, "See I todl you MacHeist was a scam."

People who are on the fence about participating in MacHeist III will remember those Diggs about bad developers and pissed off buyers.

The Digg title should have read "Don't Trust YazSoft and Here's Why"

Yazsoft Tool A: Hey, MacHeist is doing that thing again this year.

Yazsoft Tool B: Really?  Hrmmm... that could be cool to be part of.  We'll get a horde of new users and a nice tax write off.

Yazsoft Tool A: Right on.  Oh, wait: according to the dev team, version 5 will be done like a week or two after MacHeist ends.  How should we handle that?

Yazsoft Tool B: Hrmmm... we won't.  We don't tell anyone we have a new release on the way and we don't give the MacHeist customers any warning when they sign up.  Then we can push the upgrade, get a dozen or so upgrades out of them and a nice tax write off for the rest.

Yep, top notch group of guys right there.  For future reference, the right thing to do would be to either a) put a note on your website letting MacHeisters know about this before or b) hand out v5 keys instead of v4 since you knew you were doing this when you signed up to be part of MacHeist.

Gussy it up however you like, Yazsoft Tools, but a lie of omission is still a lie.

Dear developer,

This is a load of bollocks. 100% equivalent to full version licenses were promised. Well, full licenses obtained in the period we bought the bundle are eligible for a free upgrade; so should ours.

How disappointing the whole activation-for-bundle-buyers shenanigans turns out to be dodgy, indeed. Lovely software, not so lovely ethics. If the past is anything to go by you've triggered quite the shit storm, congrats.

Edit: These Mac forums are surprisingly PC... lovely **, thanks.

All right, since the developers clearly states

Purchases made via the MacHeist 2 bundle not applicable for free upgrade.

on their website, I am feeling so sad about it. It does not treat MacHeists bundle customers the same as others. I would really think twice before I purchase anything from Yazsoft.

Dear Yazsoft developers, forcing the paid upgrade for MH customers will gain you some money in the short run, and you will definitely lose a lot of royal customs too!

When I think about this whole situation, it makes me realize how bad of a move by Yazsoft this really is.

1. Folks who bought the bundle, but never installed it or use it don't matter, they wouldn't buy the upgrade from Yazsoft.
2. The folks who actually are using it got the upgrade message today and tried to activate it.  They now fall into 2 camps.  There are a few who will go ahead and buy the upgrade and give Yazsoft a little extra cash from the deal, and then there are what I think are the majority, who will be really pissed at Yazsoft and won't buy the upgrade either.

So what did they accomplish?  They maybe made a few extra bucks on the folks who went ahead and paid for the upgrade.  But just think of all the negative publicity they have generated by pulling this stunt.  This negative publicity will far out weigh any money they make off a few upgraders.  The whole idea of this bundle is to build their customer base, not generate bad PR!

While I have been enjoying speed download 4, it certainly has been buggy and not the best. However I was starting to like it, and if this update came out in 3 or 4 months, I would definitely have paid for it. It is infuriating that Yazsoft would decide to do this, especially the note on their website target specifically at MacHeist II purchasers. They made NO prior statements regarding upgrades beyond this.

Speed Download must be activated using the provided promo version. This version is the same as the currently released build of Speed Download in every way besides activation, which is required to track promo customers. You can upgrade to new versions using official, non promo releases through Yazsoft.com, or Speed Download's auto updating. We will keep a copy of the promo build available for downloading for six months until July 23rd, 2008. Please activate before then.

Upgrade, not update, as Yazsoft tried to point out earlier. It also mentions that it is exactly the same as the current release, but only different to "track promo customers" Regardless of whether this was a macheist "wording error" or not, we purchased Speed Download 4 within the required timeframe to qualify for a free update, and should receive one as such.

This is a load of B.S, and Yazsoft knows it. The right thing to do here is to give the free upgrade to all us MacHeist users. Call them out on this people.

Email Yazsoft and let them know how you cheated you feel.

I Did...

Hello There,

I am humbly writing you to ask that you reconsider your stance on allowing MacHeist II customers to upgrade to Speed Download 5 free of charge.

While I understand that you made some sort of agreement with the MacHeist team, allowing them to sell Speed Download 4 as part of their bundle, you neglected to state that our versions of Speed Download 4 would not be eligible for free upgrade. DESPITE BEING PURCHASED IN THE QUALIFYING TIME PERIOD.

Singling out MacHeist users and denying them what really should have been included in the MacHeist purchase in the first place (You sold copies of Speed Download 4, with no mention of an upcoming upgrade, only 3 weeks away?) is bad business practice and reflects poorly on your customer service, and your company in general. I am incredibly disappointed in the way this has been handled, and as such I will not be giving Yazsoft any business in the future, as well as advising others to avoid it as well.

Disappointed,

Paul T Reny

Time to put AppZapper to use again. It's a shame really, I was liking Speed Download, but launching a new major number version 3 weeks after shipping thousands of MacHeist Bundle licenses seems of bad taste to me. Especially taking in consideration this new release doesn't have that much new stuff to offer, I don't even think it should be considered a major number release.

My view: this was supposed to be a minor number release, but someone at Yazsoft saw an opportunity to make a quick buck here and decided to launch a relatively minor patch as a major release. If you had provided us a coupe of free updates under the 4.x branch and later in the year released the new 5.x with shiny new features I bet you'd have many more happy new customers paying for a deserving upgrade.

This way you just made us feel cheated on and disgruntled. Unless you take a second consideration about this, I'm betting you'll lose a heck of a lot more on the long run.

@yazsoft: Well, the Directorates said that the licenses were not just promo licenses, and just the same as if we had bought a license from the developer themselves.

Did they not tell you that? Because I'm pretty sure that is something that they would include in their proposal to have SD included in the bundle...

I'm just now finding out about this whole fiasco. The agreement with Yazsoft was that the Speed Download license was to be *the same* as the license you'd purchase through them during the bundle period.

I'm very pissed off right now and I'll be doing whatever I can to remedy this ASAP.

Hang in there...

Thanks for the statement. That was what we all were waiting for. This is not meant to be read as a complaint, I'm quite aware that you guys can not be on the forums 24h/day and these things develop really fast here...
Just hope you'll be able to calm the waves a bit:-)

I am a new Mac user and, as such, am in the heavy buying phase of outfitting my new digital environment. I will never buy anything else from YazSoft.

YazSoft has lost a lucrative segment of the Mac population. Multiply that by the spread of the news that YazSoft has ripped off it's new customers and the impact on YazSoft's financial future will, hopefully, be significant.

I think you can safely take the 43,815 pissed off people and multiply it by a factor of 7 or more.

So...

Here is an open message to any employees of YazSoft, especially those who are talented coders and had no part in the rip off of their customers:

Leave now. Before your reputation is stained by what you employers did.

Find another company where your talents are appreciated.

Don't anthropomorphize computers. They hate that.

I agree very much. We did everything we could to ensure that bundle licenses would be the same as purchases directly through the developers.

That being said, I'd really appreciate it if everyone would bury the two diggs before they hit front page:

http://digg.com/apple/Mac_Heist_users_f … ripped_off

http://digg.com/software/MacHeist_Bundl … _Upgraders

These just make *us* look bad.
