Update: Submitted to Digg! digg.com/software/MacHeist_Bundle_Developer_Lies_to_Upgraders
So according to my reciept I'm able to continue on to new versions...well today I fired up Speed Download and it told me to upgrade so I said yes...well now it's rejecting my registration information and I'm stuck with a 21 day trial...
from my receipt:
This version is the same as the currently released build of Speed Download in every way besides activation, which is required to track promo customers. You can upgrade to new versions using official, non promo releases through Yazsoft.com, or Speed Download's auto updating.

I've got the same issue. I've emailed Speed download and they've replied saying
The wording on the MacHeist site is a little misleading. It's supposed to say 'all UPDATES' not 'all UPGRADES'. Upgrades are never free, but you can get them at reduced pricing.
You may purchase SD5 at reduced pricing for $15. Simply purchase the SD5 upgrade for $15.
Thank you for choosing Speed Download. Yazsoft appreciates your business and continued support.

Which I don't agree with. If the wording is misleading they need to stand by it. Not just suddenly dump everyone down to 15 day trials.
I'm emailing them back to see what they have to say but if everyone who brought during macheist emails them it'll be very interesting.
+1
We were promised equivalent licensing to those purchased directly from the developer. We're clearly not being granted the same privileges as those who bought directly from the developer, therefore, we've been duped (presumably not by the directorate). I'm giving them the benefit of the doubt in assuming they were mislead as well. However, it's their product (the bundle), so it's their responsibility.

Not that I'm agreeing with what they're doing, but here's what makes sense from their point of view...
All people who want to upgrade to 5.0 need to purchase a new license for 15 dollars if they had the previous version. I get that much, but when they have this:
If you purchased SD 4 between Jan 01, 2008 and Feb 12, 2008, you may upgrade to SD 5 for FREE. Simply email us with your registered SD4 username and email and we will send you your personalized SD5 info.
On their site, they're bullshitting. We're supposed to get the upgrade.
It sounds like they're trying to weasel their way out of supporting the bundle app buyers... but it's very, very simple: this creates a difference between normally purchased licenses and those purchased in the bundle.
This is very bad business practice. Not only are they misleading and alienating they're newly acquired customers, in trying to pay for something they already sold (or gave). They've now got their users stuck with a version of the software that doesn't work at all. I wouldn't have minded so much, if I just knew not to update.
This however is ridiculous. They're going to get a bad rap with all of us, the early adopters, if they don't solve this flagrant abuse of their customers.
Guys,
The update window that shows up clearly says at the very top that 'Speed Download 5 is a paid upgrade'. We put it at the top specifically so that it's the first thing people see. It's also everywhere on our website.
As for the complaints from MacHeist users, I believe the confusion comes from an incorrect and potentially misleading note on the MacHeist website with regards to Speed Download. They state that all 'UPGRADES' are free. That was never quoted by us. As always, all 'UPDATES' are free.
Regardless, we are offering all MacHeist users the possibility to upgrade to SD5 at reduced pricing.
Hope that helps answer any questions and concerns.
Johnny
yazsoft, I keep getting Corrupt Executable when I open up Speed Download 4.
You can easily revert to your copy of Speed Download purchased via Macheist. Here is the direct link for your convenience:

We have a direct link here as well, thanks.
Let me ask you this, are you going to offer support for all of us that you ditched your old software on? There are obviously problems with it.

This is a lot of "crap". They new before they joined up with Mac Heist. I'm now stuck with a trial version.........
Guys,
SD4 is still supported. You don't HAVE TO upgrade to SD5. Just email us with any questions, we respond to all emails as fast as possible. We're just as human as you are.

Are you going to provide fixes and updates to SD4?
i am using the latest stable version of opera and SD4 and opera crashes when handling a .dmg-file download when SD4 is enabled. i send a report a few weeks ago and i understand that you worked on release 5 but is this bug going to be fixed in any upcomming SD4 versions or should i stop using the software?

No it does not.
We all registered Speed Download within the grace period. You should have stated that copies that were registered through a promo offer were not eligible in the first place. Though I did notice that you conveniently updated your website to make that statement.
I have uninstalled Speed Download, and will never buy anything from you again. You have lost a potentially loyal customer.

I agree! If they write this:

...then we SHOULD get the upgrade! I always knew that "oh, you need to download from here so we can track promo users" rant was a load of bulls**t...
Is this the life I had to live?
I pretend there's nothing to complain about.
Am I lost in the circle that can't be broken?
Or is this just a pale empty dream?
So here is why I dont like this
The MAIN reason for buying this years bundle was speed download...
I find out that I could have bought it from YazSoft directly for cheaper (The bundles apps are OK but havn't touched half of them!) and then I would have got a free upgrade?
I wouldnt be so annoyed if it was a cheaper upgrade so close after we bought it...
I would say $5-$10 is more reasonable thinking that I have 2 macs both with a license and I would upgrade them both.
I will use speed download... because I bought it... I wont reccommend it.. and definately wont be upgrading for $30! (only paid $39 for whole bundle for crists sake!)
At least Yazsoft is kind enough to provide an uninstaller. That's about the best I can say for them, at this point.

Which, unfortunately, does not work properly. I still had to manually delete components.

Damn it....*knew* I should have used AppZapper.
Could I trouble you to post a list of what it leaves behind, so the rest of us can expunge it from our machines?
I have put it on Digg!

The application is not that compelling. I might have used it if they would have given me a free upgrade. Maybe after some time I might have even got hooked on it and continued to use it and buy upgrades in the future. But now, only 3 weeks after buying it, I've already unistalled it (with an uninstaller that didn't work...good thing they supplied AppZapper in the bundle!) and I won't even miss it.

DON'T DO THIS!!! Just because one developer is being an ass does not mean you need to go out and permanently damage MacHeist's reputation over something that in all likelihood is completely out of their control. Yazsoft is the one being stupid, make the Digg about THEM and NOT MacHeist!!!

Did you read the Digg page? It is completely about the developer.
"YazSoft makers of Speed Download recently updated to version 5.0 which according to the MH website and website should be a free upgrade but instead users get a 21 day demo...from YazSoft.com If you purchased SD 4 between Jan 01, 2008 and Feb 12, 2008, you may upgrade to SD 5 for FREE."

You could be a little bit clearer on the title, IMO. Maybe you could add a statement to the Digg that Macheist is on the up and up, but the developer is the one being deceitful.
