The Lounge • [RANT] MobileMe
I just love how "sync" usually means "MobileMe will randomly pick one for you" when something's changed. Grrrrr.
Try using Contactizer Pro on two machines, and you'll love even more when MobileMe decides the data on the sync server isn't valid anymore, forcing you to throw all data from one machine, resetting the sync...

I installed GroupOffice the other day, and now I have a good reson to do away with iCal, Mail and Contactizer. *phew!
I wish there was a knob on the TV to turn up the intelligence. There's a knob called 'brightness', but it doesn't work.
I decided to cancel my .Mac / Mobile Me after waiting for more "promo" or "exclusive deal" apps that got me hooked in the first place.
For syncing, I'm using Calgoo Connect, so I can still use MenuCalendar iCal when I'm here and Google Calendar when I'm somewhere else. Can also be easily shared with other users.
Can't say I've tested it enough to know if it's less buggy or more reliable than MobilMe.
Mozy - backup to the cloud, restore when your computer bites the dust.

It's especially annoying this time because it "synced" the MacHeist server login with the old one instead of the new one. Wake up Scott...
... and the other day it "synced" my mail settings with all old settings on my laptop when things changed on my iMac.
... and a few days before that it deleted a widget I use on my laptop that I don't use on my iMac.
... and I can't count how many times I've changed a contact's email or phone number, only to see both appear after a "sync".
... and don't let me forget how it slows the system to a crawl when it's going through the motions of syncing. Forget about getting anything done if MobileMe is syncing while Time Machine is backing up.
Yeah, it does work some of the time, but for the most part, it's garbage. Just not up to Apple standards. But then again, Apple's quality just seems to be on a downhill slide lately.
Alright, I'm done ranting. It's just frustrating when you're trying to get work done.
I've had issues with MobileMe not syncing but it works fine now for me. I had to wipe the data on my iPhone, though, but it works now.
I like MobileMe's storage space. I've got a lot stored on there.
So, yeah. That's nice

From what I've read Snow Leopard will add new support for Microsoft's Exchange Server to the push messaging support Apple integrated into iPhone 2.0. That may finally straighten out MobileMe sync.
Friends don't let friends use Apple web apps.

Was Contactizer itself giving you trouble? Or was it just Apple's sync feature?

Snow Leopard will support Microsoft Exchange for mail, calendaring, etc. This implies that Mail.app will be able to natively talk to Microsoft Exchange provided you use a Microsoft Exchange server for email (like in corporate environments). While this may help MobileMe users who use Microsoft Exchange, it won't help people who do not use Microsoft Exchange (which is the majority of users). Even in the former case, the benefits, if any, would be restricted to the data stored/managed on the Microsoft Exchange side.

@bob: Just Apple's sync feature. But the problem is of course that I needed the same data on 2+ computers. "The magicks of intertubes and spiderwebs" solved the problem ![]()

Thanks WhiteFang. I've read many horror stories about Apple's synchronization. I don't use iCal or Address Book, and unfortunately many 3rd party applications love to rely on them.

I wish someone could tell the apple fanboys that infest the apple supprt forums about the declining quality....

Take it from someone who knows - telling "religious exremeists" that they may be wrong has the opposite effect of what you intended. Regradless of what "religious sect" may be involved...

Declining? I don't use MobileMe but I've kept my eye and ear on it from when Apple first came out with their online syncing solution and I've always heard people complaining about it just as I've heard people brag about it. I think you hear more about it now mostly as a result of its usage growing.

Declining quality? It's only gone up from the launch. Apple admitted the mistakes of MobileMe and they're doing all they can to correct them.
And to be honest, Activesync and Exchange have just as many problems. Cloud computing is still a pain.
I've had PDA's of one guise or another for many years mostly Psion Organizers, iPaqs etc and every one has caused problems around syncing eventually.
Syncing seems to be a black art that eventually always seems to get its knickers in a twist. the end result usually being deleted and missing entries or the really annoying duplicate entries.

No, I'm just saying I've not had the problems others have had. It's been good for me.
I've never had any form of syncing ever work correctly. From Palm HotSync up to iSync+.mac. Although TBQH I've never lost anything with .mac syncing, it's just annoyed my with WHICH ONE OF THESE SHOULD I CHOOSE?!?! dialogs. I haven't used it seriously since they rebranded it MobileMe (only one mac now, and my phone syncs to the mac directly with iSync/Bluetooth) so I don't know if things have changed.

My original "declining quality" comment had to do with Apple in general lately, rather than MobileMe in particular. Sure, it's debatable but I really feel like Apple is just losing it as far as the care they put into the things they do. I really hope I'm wrong in the long run.

I don't think they've really declined in quality, it's just our standards have been raised due to the high quality of refinement of Apple's more advanced products. I think you've just forgotten just how crappy OS X 10.0-10.2 were.
